Darius Garland’s new journey with the Los Angeles Clippers has sparked fresh hope and energy. After being acquired in a major trade earlier this year, the expectations surrounding him have only grown.
Yet, despite his impressive performance, head coach Tyronn Lue is pushing Garland to tap into even greater potential.
Since joining the Clippers, the former All-Star has played a significant role in their 12-5 run, injecting speed and creativity to a team that seemed poised for a rework. His synergy with Kawhi Leonard and the rest of the roster has been largely seamless, yet Lue insists there is room for Garland to become even more assertive.
“I’ve noticed that when he gets a rebound, he tends to jog it up instead of pushing tempo to attack the paint early before defenses can get set,” Lue remarked.

The directive is unambiguous. The Clippers do not need Garland to simply fit in. They expect him to take charge.
This concept has been pivotal since his onboarding. When Garland first arrived, he expressed his desire to “fit in.” Lue quickly countered that, emphasizing that the system would adapt to leverage Garland’s strengths, not vice versa.
This perspective has fostered a more confident version of the 26-year-old, but there remain instances where he holds back instead of attacking. For someone with his ball-handling skills, quickness, and scoring instincts, these missed chances can stagnate an offense that flourishes on creating early opportunities.

Garland’s transition to the Clippers may have seemed abrupt from an outside perspective, but he personally anticipated this change well before the trade deadline that sent him to Los Angeles in exchange for James Harden.
The former Cavaliers standout shared that he had been mentally preparing for this shift for quite some time. In his view, it was a transition he foresaw long before it materialized.
“This is a new chapter in my life,” he stated. “Rich mentioned it even last summer, hinting that it might be our last year there. So, I was prepared. I knew it would happen sooner or later. When it did, I said, ‘Let’s get going.’”
However, this awareness revealed a context that had been brewing quietly. Even as the Cavaliers remained competitive, the team dynamics had shifted significantly. Donovan Mitchell emerged as the primary focal point, leaving Garland to seek a role that better aligned with his capabilities.
