Heat Stand Firm as Lakers’ Trade Pursuit of Wiggins Hits a Standstill

    NBA on ESPN

The market for athletic and defensively strong players is extremely limited this season. The Los Angeles Lakers understand their defensive weaknesses and the strong necessity to bolster that aspect of their game ahead of the trade deadline.

Recently, the Lakers have renewed their interest in Miami Heat star Andrew Wiggins. The team has explored Wiggins several times, aiming to fill their need for versatile two-way wings. However, NBA insider Brett Siegel indicates that the Heat are not impressed by any offers made by the Lakers.

Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins is a player the Lakers engaged in trade talks about this past offseason. He represents the ideal type of athletic 3-and-D wing to complement Doncic, James, and Reaves. The obstacle is that the Heat have not been swayed by any proposals from Los Angeles, signaling they are not actively shopping Wiggins,” the report stated.

The Lakers’ most significant vulnerabilities this season center on their perimeter defense and the absence of dependable 3-and-D wings, essential players who can contribute on both ends of the court. From the Lakers’ perspective, bringing in Wiggins would directly address these deficiencies and vastly enhance their championship aspirations.

Heat’s Hesitation on Andrew Wiggins Could Change If Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Emerges

The Heat have shown reluctance to part with Wiggins in favor of a trade with the Lakers. Yet, Siegel reports that Miami would be open to discussions if superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo were involved. The Heat have the most compelling package available to acquire Giannis during the season.

If one team emerges as a perfect fit for Giannis right now, it’s the Miami Heat. With options like Andrew Wiggins, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez, and several draft picks, the Heat can assemble the most attractive offer for Antetokounmpo mid-season,” Siegel specified.

The Heat have recently struggled, winning only two of their last ten games. Similar to the Lakers, Miami is in a rebuilding phase. However, Wiggins has proven to be a consistent contributor, making the team more hesitant to trade him unless a deal meets their high expectations and standards for transformation.
