A recent release of body camera footage has brought new clarity to the chaotic events surrounding the arrest of a former Miami Marlins draft pick, who is accused of causing extensive damage inside the Washington State Capitol.
TMZ Sports acquired footage of the chaotic scene where officers responded to an abandoned vehicle discovered in the Capitol’s landscaping. During the search for the driver, officers were alerted by fire alarms ringing inside the building and immediately rushed in to investigate the source.
Upon entering, police located Gunnar Schubert, 29, outside the premises. Officers commanded him to the ground and proceeded to handcuff him. Before his detention, Schubert discarded a can of lighter fluid, as shown in the footage.
After placing Schubert in a patrol vehicle, the officers entered the Capitol to gauge the extent of the damage. In State Representative Liz Berry‘s office, they identified a shattered window, reportedly broken using two hammers.
Throughout the Capitol, officers encountered broken glass, smoke filling the State Reception Room, and a charred flag. Additionally, one officer observed what seemed to be cigarette ash in one section of the building.
Schubert was initially detained on charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree arson, and first-degree malicious mischief. However, prosecutors later revised the charges to second-degree burglary, a felony, and third-degree malicious mischief, classified as a gross misdemeanor.
Prior to this incident, Schubert played college baseball at Gonzaga, participating in 110 games and hitting five home runs alongside 56 RBIs. He was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 27th round of the MLB draft and advanced to Single-A Jupiter before being released.
Schubert’s next court appearance is scheduled for next month as the case progresses.
