The New York Yankees face a continuous stream of injury challenges as they place Angel Chivilli on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Thursday.
This right-handed pitcher has been sidelined due to discomfort in his right shoulder. This ongoing issue delays his possible return to the lineup until at least May 8.
In a strategic move, the Yankees activated Ryan Weathers, a left-handed pitcher who had recently taken a short leave for paternity leave after the birth of his son.
Chivilli, a product of the Dominican Republic, joined the Yankees through an offseason trade that included TJ Rumfield. During his brief time on the mound this season, he has made two appearances, yielding two hits and one run while striking out three batters. You can find more about his statistics here.
Prior to his promotion to the majors on April 15, Chivilli had been making waves in Triple-A after being traded from the Rockies. The Yankees had sent Yerry De Los Santos back down to Triple-A as part of the roster reshuffle.
His impressive performance in Triple-A included 8.1 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, supporting the decision to bring him up. He also managed to secure two hits and two walks during that stretch.
Manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism regarding Chivilli’s potential development, stating, “We think there’s more room there for his secondary to become really good pitches for him,” as noted in the New York Daily News.
He emphasized, “For him, it’s about controlling the strike zone and command. If he can control counts, he’s got some swing and miss with his secondary stuff. The fastball is big. He’ll be in the mid-to-upper-90s with his fastball, but he needs his secondary.”
Despite the ongoing injury issues that have prompted multiple changes in the bullpen, the Yankees maintain their position atop the AL East standings. Heading into Monday’s matchup against the Astros, the Yankees sport a record of 18-10.
Other teams in the AL East include the 16-11 Rays, 13-15 Orioles, 12-15 Blue Jays, and 11-17 Red Sox. Notably, the Red Sox recently made headlines by firing manager Alex Cora and five additional coaching staff members over the weekend.
