In a statement, the team announced, “The Tigers today placed RHP Justin Verlander on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 1) with left hip inflammation.” Additionally, RHP Keider Montero has been called up from Triple-A Toledo.
This decision arises as the Tigers compete in a three-game series against the Cardinals. After claiming a decisive 4-0 victory in the first game, Detroit held a 3-1 advantage over St. Louis during Saturday’s matchup. The series is set to conclude on Sunday evening.
Verlander, now 43, made his season debut recently against the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he allowed five runs over nearly four innings. Originally scheduled to start against the Cardinals on Sunday, Montero will take his place on the mound instead.
Coming from Virginia, Verlander began his MLB journey with the Tigers back in 2005. Over his 12-season tenure in Detroit, he achieved significant milestones, including a six-time All-Star selection and leading the league in win-loss percentage in 2007 (75%) and 2011 (82.8%).
Verlander secured the Rookie of the Year award in 2006 and clinched the MVP title in 2011. That same year, he was honored with his first Cy Young Award while guiding the Tigers to postseason play.
After departing Detroit, Verlander took his talents to Houston during the 2017 season. During his seven years in Texas, he celebrated two World Series championships and added three more All-Star nods to his impressive resume.
He briefly played for the Mets in 2023 and the Giants in 2025 before rejoining the Tigers. The anticipation remains high for Verlander to lace up his cleats again and make crucial starts for the franchise that selected him second overall in 2004. However, he must first navigate his recovery from this left hip inflammation.
