The Toronto Blue Jays are facing a significant challenge as catcher Alejandro Kirk has suffered a fracture.
This injury took place on April 3 during a game against the Chicago White Sox. Pitcher Jeff Hoffman delivered a pitch aimed at batter Austin Hays, who only managed a partial contact. The ball struck Kirk’s glove hand before deflecting away as a foul.
Immediately, Kirk removed his glove and clutched his left thumb. Despite holding a 4-3 lead, the Blue Jays had to take Kirk out of the game. The White Sox later surged ahead, claiming a 5-4 victory.

Teammate Ernie Clement praised Kirk’s toughness, stating, “He’s a warrior. It’s pretty hard to get him to come out of a baseball game.” Clement acknowledged the severity of the situation, saying, “You kind of knew it wasn’t good, so it’s just the next man up. We dealt with it last year, and we’ll be ready to roll.”
In response, the Blue Jays placed Kirk on the 10-day injured list. The team has called up Brandon Valenzuela from Triple-A, making him active for the game against the White Sox. For now, Tyler Heineman will take over as the starting catcher.
The organization stated that Kirk, a 2025 All-Star, will travel to Pennsylvania on Monday to consult with hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham. They will evaluate the injury’s extent and possible treatment options.
Surgery could be a necessary step to repair the fracture. Alternatively, the doctors might consider inserting a pin into the catcher’s thumb. This meeting will help gauge if Kirk could return in a matter of weeks or if he faces a longer recovery period.
The Mexico-born Kirk has dedicated his entire MLB career to the Blue Jays, making his debut in 2020. He has garnered All-Star honors twice and earned the Silver Slugger award in 2022, recognizing him as one of the top offensive players in his position.
