Shohei Ohtani, a standout player for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has reached a new milestone in his remarkable career. He has set a record for jersey sales that is hard to ignore.
Major League Baseball (MLB) reports that the jersey Ohtani donned during the World Baseball Classic fetched an astonishing $1,500,010 at auction. This amount eclipsed his previous highest jersey sale of $249,999 for a game-worn Dodgers jersey from the 2024 season, which bore the inscription “’24 NL MVP” written by Ohtani himself.
News from ESPN indicates that the seven-day auction for the World Baseball Classic jersey attracted 298 bids, as eager collectors vied for this coveted item. This final sale price far surpassed the $126,110 achieved for Ohtani’s 2023 World Baseball Classic jersey.
During this year’s World Baseball Classic, Ohtani represented Japan with flair and skill. He significantly contributed to Japan’s dominant 13-0 victory over Chinese Taipei, showcasing his prowess with three hits, five RBIs, one run, and even hitting a Grand Slam in the second inning.
Though Japan reached the quarterfinals, they bowed out to eventual champion Venezuela with a score of 8-5.
As a four-time MVP, Ohtani has a knack for igniting fierce competition among bidders. Items associated with him consistently command incredible prices, bolstered by his impressive on-field performance.
A notable example is his 50th home run ball from 2024, which sold for an eye-popping $4.39 million to Taiwanese investment firm UC Capital. This ball marked an unprecedented moment in MLB history, highlighting Ohtani’s achievement of the first 50-50 season—hitting 50 home runs and stealing 50 bases within a single season.
Furthermore, his 2025 Topps Chrome MVP Award Gold MLB Logoman card sold for a remarkable $3 million, while a dual MVP Gold Logoman card featuring both Ohtani and Aaron Judge went for $2.16 million.
