Remembering the Legacy of MLB All-Star and Coach Phil Garner: A Tribute to His Life

    KHOU 11

Legendary MLB player and manager Phil “Scrap Iron” Garner has passed away at the age of 76.

The family confirmed his passing, revealing that he fought a brave battle against pancreatic cancer. Major League Baseball disclosed that he had been diagnosed in February 2024, leading to two years filled with numerous treatments including radiation and chemotherapy.

“Phil Garner passed away peacefully last night, April 11, surrounded by family and love after a two-plus-year battle with pancreatic cancer,” stated his family, as reported by MLB.

“Phil never lost his signature spark or his love for baseball.” The family expressed special gratitude to the Houston Medical Center, MD Anderson, Baylor St. Luke’s, and all the doctors and nurses for their excellent care throughout his illness.

A Tennessee native, Garner had a 16-season career in Major League Baseball. He played for teams such as the A’s, Pirates, Astros, Dodgers, and Giants, earning All-Star honors three times. In 1975, he notably led the league with 160 games played and contributed to the Pirates’ World Series victory in 1979 after scoring eight runs, including one home run, in just 10 games.

After retiring as a player, Garner shifted into coaching post the 1988 season, stepping into his first managerial role with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1992.

Garner managed the Brewers for eight seasons, finishing with a record of 563-617. He then took over the Detroit Tigers from 2000 to 2002, with the team posting a record of 145-185.

Garner achieved significant success when he became manager of the Houston Astros in 2004. Leading the team for four seasons, Garner’s tenure saw a record of 277-252 and, most importantly, brought the Astros to their first World Series appearance in 2005. Although the championship eluded them, this pivotal moment laid the groundwork for future achievements.

“On behalf of the Astros, Whitney and I extend our heartfelt condolences to Phil’s wife, Carol, their children, and his many friends, fans, and admirers,” said Astros owner Jim Crane in a statement. “Phil Garner’s impact on the Houston Astros, the city, and baseball as a whole will always be remembered.”
