Mariners Unveiling Ceremony Takes Unexpected Turn as Ichiro Statue Cracks

    YouTube

On Friday, excitement turned into an unexpected twist for the Seattle Mariners during the unveiling of an Ichiro Suzuki statue. What was meant to be a celebration became a moment of mishap when the statue was damaged while the cover was removed.

After a dramatic countdown at T-Mobile Park, the sheet was pulled away, and confetti filled the air. But soon after, observers noticed that the bat of the statue was not positioned correctly. It was bending unnaturally instead of standing tall as it should.

The intended pose, as shown in the reference image, has the bat pointed skyward, perfectly captured in Ichiro’s signature stance.

Surprisingly, Ichiro seemed unfazed by the statue’s condition, offering a laugh as fellow Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. playfully clasped his shoulders from behind.

This bronze statue was crafted by sculptor Lou Cella from Chicago, who has also designed other statues for T-Mobile Park, including those of Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, and Dave Niehaus.

The Mariners embraced the blooper rather than allowing it to overshadow the moment. They took to X to share an update, revealing that the giveaway versions of the statue had also been tweaked to display a broken bat.

Despite the statue’s blunder, Ichiro remains a pivotal figure for the Mariners. His impact on the team during his tenure in the Pacific Northwest is immeasurable.

Now a Hall of Famer, Ichiro spent the first 12 years of his remarkable 19-year career with the Mariners. He returned for a final two-season stretch, totaling 14 memorable years on the field in Seattle.

During his time with the team, Ichiro garnered 10 All-Star selections and earned 10 Gold Glove awards. His remarkable achievements include being named Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season (2001).

He claimed three Silver Slugger awards while with the Mariners and led the league in various categories, including a stunning 56 stolen bases during his rookie year. He also topped the league in hits in 2001, 2004, and from 2006 to 2010.
