Arkansas men’s basketball is gearing up for a pivotal Sweet 16 matchup against Texas Tech in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, stepping onto the court as 5.5-point underdogs. But the Razorbacks have received a significant boost just days before this high-stakes game: leading scorer Adou Thiero will be available to play.
Head coach John Calipari shared the encouraging news during a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, confirming that Thiero will be joining the team on Thursday night. “Adou Thiero is available. He is available,” Calipari stated, offering fans and players alike a reason for optimism.
This development is particularly exciting given that Arkansas had just welcomed back Boogie Fland, who missed the last 15 games due to a hand injury. In a successful return, Fland contributed six points in each of the Razorbacks’ tournament victories over the weekend, proving that his presence was a crucial part of the team’s dynamic.
“Now, I played Boogie, who was available, 15, 18 minutes, but he helped us win the game,” Calipari remarked. “He made the steal, he made the plays, he made the assists. Now Adou, it’s a different deal because we need his toughness and his athleticism. The most he’ll play, 12 minutes, maybe 15…But you gotta prepare now because we’re a different team. Finally, we got a full roster.”
Thiero’s last appearance on the court was on February 22, and since then, the Razorbacks have performed admirably, boasting a 6-2 record without him. This attests to the depth and resilience of the squad, but having Thiero back in the mix represents a significant elevation in their competitive edge.
Calipari recounted a conversation with Fland that underlined the team-first mentality driving the Razorbacks. “Boogie came to me and said, ‘I don’t wanna hurt this team. You just tell me how you want me to play because we’re playing good,’” he reflected. “And I said, ‘listen, you’re gonna play off the ball instead of on the ball. Make plays. And I need you to defend and come up with steals.’ I don’t know how much you’ll play, but be ready. I’ll have the same talk with Adou. Adou wanted to play. The only reason he’s playing is he said, ‘I’m playing. I wanna help this team.’”
Even with all these reinforcements, Arkansas has a monumental challenge ahead of them, meeting a Texas Tech team ranked as high as eighth by KenPom this season. The Razorbacks haven’t faced a team of such caliber yet this year, making their impressive upset against 2 seed St. John’s in the previous round even more noteworthy.
As fans gear up for the game, the excitement is palpable. This is more than just a game; it’s an opportunity for redemption, for proving that they can fight against the odds and emerge victorious. The return of Thiero adds to the thrill, infusing both the players and the fans with renewed hope and determination as they prepare for a battle on the court.
