Inside the FBI’s Investigation into College Basketball Gambling and What It Means for Fans and Players

This week, the focus shifts to ongoing investigations surrounding sports betting in college basketball, particularly concerning various Division I programs. These inquiries hold the potential to affect numerous athletes across the collegiate landscape.

With new gambling scandals emerging almost daily in the U.S., the recent controversies involving the NBA and UFC stand out for a specific reason: both have drawn the attention of FBI investigators. As the federal government intensifies its scrutiny on bet-rigging incidents, college basketball appears to be caught in a storm that could bring forth serious allegations and significant consequences for programs and their fanbases alike.

College basketball is particularly vulnerable to betting fraud. Many athletes in this sport operate without substantial compensation and often face a challenging path to a lucrative professional career. Unlike college football, the sheer number of teams enhances the impact individual players have on game outcomes. Additionally, college students typically lack the maturity found in seasoned professionals, making them more susceptible to manipulative tactics from criminal elements. Institutions with smaller athletic programs also often lack the resources crucial for educating their athletes about compliance and ethical conduct.

A recent excerpt from the latest Club Sportico essay outlines these concerns:

The evidence is becoming increasingly evident. In September, the NCAA launched an investigation into 13 players across six universities, including Arizona State, Temple, Eastern Michigan, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T, and Mississippi Valley State, for possible gambling violations. Just weeks later, the NCAA disclosed that its enforcement division is probing approximately 30 current or former men’s basketball players amid the NBA’s growing betting controversy. Recent findings from these investigations have been alarming, as the NCAA announced that six players were found to have committed violations leading to permanent ineligibility.

Federal authorities are now part of this unfolding narrative. Some individuals linked to the FBI’s investigation of the NBA have also been identified in questionable college betting activities. Reports indicate that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania is scrutinizing allegations of point shaving in college basketball, a troubling scenario for NCAA leadership, particularly if it pertains to smaller institutions like New Orleans.

The NCAA has been proactive in addressing these issues, acknowledging that they are likely aware of any federal investigations surrounding these allegations. Over the past year, the Indianapolis-based organization has urged state lawmakers to act against college prop bets, sometimes successfully, while also stressing the legal and psychological toll gambling could impose on athletes.

A survey conducted by the NCAA in 2023 revealed that 25% of athletes from “Power Five” conferences and 10% of Division I athletes reported experiencing harassment from individuals with gambling interests.
