The Fighting Irish, directed by coach Micah Shrewsberry, are actively seeking depth to fill this void. On Thursday, the team confirmed the addition of freshman Mark Zackery IV to the roster. Zackery just wrapped up his inaugural collegiate football season at cornerback for Notre Dame, where he recorded 10 tackles and two passes defended in 11 games. Despite his recent football commitment, Zackery was a standout on the high school basketball scene, known as a former Indiana Class 4A state champion and Indiana All-Star.
“Mark will be an excellent addition to our program,” Shrewsberry stated. “I’ve watched him play countless times during his high school career. Competing with Team Teague, Indiana Elite, and at Ben Davis High School, he consistently contributed to winning outcomes. His skills in ball handling, playmaking, and defense will benefit us greatly. Plus, he is a fantastic young man who enhances both our locker room and team culture.”
Zackery’s journey to this point includes significant achievements. According to Notre Dame’s official website, he secured the state championship with Ben Davis High School as a sophomore and returned to the title game as a junior, averaging impressive statistics of 11.0 points, 2.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. His time on the AAU circuit with teammates Logan Imes and Braeden Shrewsberry further showcased his talent. In football, he earned the title of Indiana Mr. Football in 2024 and stood out as a four-star prospect according to 247Sports.
Currently, the Fighting Irish hold an 8-3 record and are coming off an 80-65 win against Idaho on Wednesday. They are set to face Evansville next on Saturday.
