    WBIR Channel 10

Candace Parker, a titan in the realm of women’s basketball, has made an indelible mark on the sport and the University of Tennessee. Her contributions were pivotal during her time there, leading the Lady Vols to back-to-back NCAA championships in 2007 and 2008, solidifying her legacy within the program and the state.

Recently, Parker was honored as the special guest on ESPN’s College GameDay, showcasing her enduring connection to Tennessee as it faced off against Georgia, ranked No. 6. This tribute followed a heartfelt speech by host Pat McAfee, remembering Parker’s transformative impact on the program from 2004 to 2008.

During her collegiate career under the legendary coach Pat Summitt, Parker not only excelled on the court but also captured the attention of basketball fans everywhere. She recorded impressive statistics, averaging 19.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. Her accolades include the prestigious John R. Wooden Award in both 2007 and 2008, along with the Naismith Award in 2008. Furthermore, she was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament in both championship years and earned the title of SEC Player of the Year in her final season.

Following her successes in college, Parker transitioned to the WNBA, where she has had a storied career with the Los Angeles Sparks, Chicago Sky, and Las Vegas Aces. Her achievements include winning three WNBA championships in 2016, 2021, and 2023. This year marked another milestone as her jersey was retired by the Sparks, and she also received the same honor from her hometown of Chicago in August.

Candace Parker’s Lasting Commitment to Tennessee

No matter where her career has taken her, Parker’s connection to Tennessee remains strong. She actively supports her alma mater and contributes to the community. In 2021, she partnered with a nonprofit organization called Blackboard to revitalize a basketball court in Knoxville.

Parker has also played a key role in the collaboration between Tennessee basketball and Adidas, leveraging her position as an executive with the sportswear giant. Her recent appearance on College GameDay coincided with a vital recruiting weekend for the Lady Vols, further emphasizing her commitment to the program.

In the spirit of her former coach Pat Summitt, Parker continues to give back to Tennessee, reinforcing her legacy not just as a player, but as a mentor and supporter of future generations.
