Shohei Ohtani delivered another standout performance that left fans buzzing.

Saturday night in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals, the Japanese icon launched a leadoff home run, sending a wave of excitement rippling through the crowd at LoanDepot Park. Fans were ready to witness yet another unforgettable Ohtani moment in a crucial matchup.

However, the night would unfold differently.

Venezuela rallied to defeat the defending champions Japan with an 8-5 victory, marking a historic leap into the WBC semifinals for the first time. They also clinched a spot in the 2028 Olympic baseball tournament in Los Angeles.

“It was the kind of game where we had chances to win. We showcased our strengths, but they overpowered us in the end,” Ohtani reflected to Yahoo Sports.

This game will surely be remembered.

Ohtani’s homer tied the game early, and Japan gained momentum as Shota Morishita hit a three-run homer in the third, pushing them ahead 5-2.

Yet, the Venezuelan offense flipped the narrative.

Ronald Acuña Jr. kicked things off with his own leadoff homer. Maikel Garcia added a two-run shot in the fifth, and Wilyer Abreu delivered the decisive three-run homer in the sixth that electrified the pro-Venezuela fans.

From that moment, Venezuela’s bullpen slammed the door shut.

Six relievers combined for over six scoreless innings, effectively neutralizing Japan’s offense. Ohtani was intentionally walked once, struck out twice, and flew out to end the game in the ninth.

“All I can say is that it’s really frustrating,” Ohtani stated. “We had our moments to win. It wasn’t a situation where we were completely dominated. There were definitely chances for us to claim victory.”

Three years ago, Ohtani struck out Mike Trout to secure the WBC title.

This time, it was Venezuela that emerged victorious.

With this monumental win, Venezuela moves on to face Italy in Monday’s semifinal and secures its place in the Olympic baseball tournament for the first time.

“We’re a powerhouse in baseball,” asserted manager Omar López.
