Tanner Scott’s Bold Mindset Shift Could Be The Key To Reviving The Dodgers’ Season

Tanner Scott saw promising prospects after an impressive 2024 season, during which he boasted a remarkable ERA of 1.75 across 72 games, encompassing 72 innings of work. This performance led him to secure a lucrative four-year, $72 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reigning champions. Expectations were high for Scott to strengthen an already formidable bullpen, enhancing the Dodgers’ ability to clinch victories with a sense of added reliability in the ninth inning.

    Struggles in His First Season

However, Scott’s transition to the Dodgers has not unfolded as anticipated. Although he was not involved in the team’s recent disappointing performance against the Philadelphia Phillies—where they surrendered three runs in the ninth inning during a 9-6 loss—Scott has expressed frustration. He has openly acknowledged his struggles to maintain the standard he set for himself, even going as far as stating that “baseball hates him.”

With the postseason fast approaching, Scott is adopting a laid-back yet fierce mentality, throwing caution to the wind and “letting the chips fall where they may.” He articulated this mindset clearly, saying, “Well, I kind of just have the (to heck with it) attitude right now. I don’t know. I’m just trying to go out there right now and not think. Just say, ‘F**k it.’ I mean, that’s how I always pitched. I kind of lost it this year. Now I’m back to ‘F**k it.’”

    The Pressure of Expectations

The weight of a high-stakes contract and the spotlight of playing for the Dodgers may be contributing to Scott’s performance challenges. Despite this, there remains an opportunity for him to shift narratives. A strong showing in the upcoming playoffs could erase the memory of his lackluster 2025 performance.

Understanding the Challenges of Major League Baseball

Scott’s difficult journey this season underscores the extraordinary challenges inherent in Major League Baseball. All players at this level are exceptionally talented, where even the smallest detail can significantly impact their performance. Factors such as a minor decrease in velocity or a slip in confidence can shake a player’s composure. Currently, Scott is grappling with an ERA of 4.82, epitomizing the tough reality of competing in the major leagues.

“You always want to perform to the standard that you believe you are and the team and the fans see you as. When (stuff) goes south, you never want it to happen. But if baseball was easy, everyone would be playing it,” he reflected, emphasizing the inherent difficulties of the sport.

The complexities of performance and expectation in sports can create a tumultuous landscape for even the most adept athletes. Every pitch, every game, and every season brings along its own trials, and for Scott, the coming months could define his future trajectory in baseball.
