President Donald Trump recently ignited a significant debate by urging the owners of the NFL’s Washington Commanders and Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians to revert to their former team names. His argument centers on the belief that the changes have disrespected Native American heritage and do not reflect the sentiments of the broader public.
In a post shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump made a passionate case for restoring the “Redskins” and “Indians” names, asserting that there’s considerable public support for this idea. “The Washington ‘Whatevers’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this,” he declared. Regarding the Cleveland team, he reminisced about its historical significance, saying, “Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past.”
Trump highlights that many Indigenous people feel their heritage and recognition are being eroded by the name changes, urging, “Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!”
The Washington Commanders, previously known as the Redskins since 1933, made the decision to drop the name in 2020 amid a wave of nationwide racial justice protests. Following this decision, then-owner Daniel Snyder opted to temporarily rebrand the team as the Washington Football Team before officially adopting the Commanders name in 2022. The franchise changed hands when Snyder sold the team to Josh Harris in 2023.
In a 2023 interview with Fox News Channel’s Special Report, Harris stated unequivocally that the organization does not plan to revert to the Redskins name, even as it moves forward with plans for a new stadium in Washington, D.C. “The Commanders name actually has taken on an amazing kind of element in our building,” Harris expressed, emphasizing a forward-looking perspective. “We’re kind of moving forward with the Commanders name, excited about that, and not looking back.”
Meanwhile, in Cleveland, team owner Paul Dolan announced the Guardians name change in 2021, putting an end to over a century of the franchise being known as the Indians. This decision was framed by Dolan as a response to a personal “awakening or epiphany” that followed the death of George Floyd in 2020, reflecting a broader societal push for cultural sensitivity.
Despite the intention behind these rebrands, the Guardians’ management has not indicated any plans to revert to the previous name. The changes have certainly sparked discussions about cultural respect, and while some celebrate these updates as steps towards greater sensitivity, others vocally oppose them. Detractors argue that names like “Indians” and “Redskins” were meant to honor, rather than diminish, Native American identities.
This ongoing debate brings to light the complexities surrounding sports team names, cultural identity, and how history interweaves with present-day values.
