The excitement is mounting as North Carolina A&T State University and Hampton University gear up for a pivotal matchup during the NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles. Scheduled for February 13, 2026, this marks the fifth annual NBA HBCU Classic, an event designed to highlight the rich athletic traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

    Strong Representation from HBCUs

Earl M. Hilton III, the Director of Athletics at North Carolina A&T, expressed his enthusiasm, framing the game as a celebration of the long-standing basketball rivalry between the two proud institutions. “This event allows us to showcase our athletic heritage on a global stage,” Hilton noted. The significance of this matchup extends beyond sports; it represents a legacy that has produced influential figures from both schools.

Hampton University’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Anthony D. Henderson, Sr., echoed this sentiment. “Participating in the NBA HBCU Classic is not merely about the game; it’s an extraordinary chance for us to display the talent and excellence our student-athletes embody,” he stated. Both institutions are eager to bring their unique pride to Los Angeles, enhancing awareness of HBCU culture among a wider audience.

A New Chapter for HBCU Basketball

This year’s event is notable as it features two HBCU basketball programs that are now part of the Coastal Athletic Association, having transitioned from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). This shift elevates the significance of their rivalry, highlighting the evolution of both teams. Previous HBCU Classics have showcased legendary matchups such as Southern University against Grambling State University and Howard University squaring off against Morgan State University, but this is the first instance where neither school belongs to an HBCU-exclusive athletic conference.

    Building on Tradition

The NBA HBCU Classic was inaugurated in 2022 to not only celebrate the sport of basketball but also to foster opportunities for HBCU students and alumni. Past games have included several high-profile matchups, enhancing the visibility of HBCU athletic programs and contributing to their legacy in American sports culture. Some of the previous contests featured well-known universities, creating a platform for future stars to emerge.

As February approaches, anticipation builds for a game that promises to deliver both competitive basketball and a meaningful tribute to HBCU heritage. The event encapsulates a spirit of community and celebration, bringing together past achievements while paving the way for future opportunities.

In a world where sports serve as a uniting force, events like the NBA HBCU Classic illuminate the rich history and impact of HBCUs, making this game not just a matchup of talent, but a vibrant celebration of culture and legacy.
