New NBA Star VJ Edgecombe Shatters LeBron and Iverson’s Records in Stunning Debut Against Celtics

    House of Highlights/YouTube

In a thrilling season opener, Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe made headlines with a performance that etched his name into NBA history. The 76ers emerged victorious against the Boston Celtics with a nail-biting score of 117-116, largely thanks to Edgecombe’s impressive debut marks of 34 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

    Breaking Long-Standing Records

Drafted as the No. 3 overall pick from Baylor, Edgecombe didn’t just shine; he also broke records that had been untouched for more than two decades. During the first quarter, he scored 14 points, surpassing LeBron James’ 12-point record for the highest first-quarter scoring in an NBA debut, which was set back in 2003. Edgecombe later eclipsed Allen Iverson’s franchise record for most points in a debut when he hit his 31st and 32nd points in the fourth quarter, a record that stood at 30 points since Iverson’s first game in 1996.

Coach’s Praise and Areas for Improvement

Commenting on Edgecombe’s landmark debut, 76ers coach Nick Nurse noted, “It’s a fantastic start. He found ways to score and showed promise, but there’s still room for growth. I want him to be a bit more aggressive in transition.” Nurse’s observations highlight not just the rookie’s talent but also the potential further development that could enhance his contributions to the team.

    Edgecombe’s Place in NBA History

Edgecombe’s scoring total places him third all-time for points in an NBA debut, behind Wilt Chamberlain’s historic 43 points and Frank Selvy’s 35-point showing. Nurse chuckled when discussing the significance of this ranking, stating that Edgecombe displayed remarkable composure for such a young player, adding, “You don’t see him making silly mistakes. He just plays the game the right way.” This indicates not only skill but also a mature basketball IQ, a rare combination in new entrants to the league.

A Dramatic Fourth Quarter and Team Dynamics

Despite trailing by 11 points heading into the final quarter, the 76ers rallied behind the offensive prowess of Edgecombe and teammate Tyrese Maxey, who also had a remarkable game, contributing 40 points—tying Hal Greer for the most points scored in a franchise season opener. While Edgecombe was breaking records, star player Joel Embiid struggled with just four points in 20 minutes and found himself sidelined in the closing moments of the game.

    Future Potential and Early Impressions

Before joining the NBA, Edgecombe was a highly rated recruit during the 2024 cycle, culminating in a powerful season at Baylor under coach Scott Drew. His athleticism and determination greatly impressed scouts, leading the 76ers to choose him over other prospects, such as Ace Bailey, who was selected just after him. As Edgecombe makes his mark in the league, the anticipation surrounding his development and overall impact continues to grow.
