Max Scherzer Refuses To Celebrate Rehab Success, Focuses on Future With Blue Jays

Max Scherzer, the celebrated former Cy Young Award recipient, has been a notable absentee for the Toronto Blue Jays since March 29. The 40-year-old ace has only managed to contribute three innings to the team in 2025 due to a nagging thumb injury that has placed him on John Schneider’s injured list. His absence, along with fellow pitcher Yimi Garcia’s, has been felt as the Blue Jays aim to close the gap with the New York Yankees in the competitive American League East.

Despite the challenge, the Blue Jays have shown resilience, managing to stay afloat with Kevin Gausman and the rest of the starting rotation. They’ve proven capable in Scherzer’s absence, but getting him back in the lineup could provide a significant lift as they push for playoff contention.

Scherzer’s journey towards recovery took a positive step when he completed 4 1/3 innings during a rehab start with Triple-A Buffalo. Post-game, he caught up with Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi to share insight into his progress and his determination to return to the major leagues.

“Sure, it’s an encouraging step,” Scherzer said. “But I’m not popping any champagne until I’m back in a big-league game and can perform consistently at that level. This thumb issue is serious, and I’m not ready to say I’m out of the woods just yet. I need to prove that I can handle the rigors of big-league competition and recover effectively while doing so.”

Both Scherzer and Garcia are making strides toward their returns. While Scherzer is focusing on mastering his rehab process, Garcia recently completed a bullpen session but remains on a 15-day injured list, awaiting clearance to return.

The Blue Jays have turned things around spectacularly, winning 12 of their last 14 games leading up to their matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies. This successful streak has placed them in a solid second place in the AL East. Gausman has been pivotal on the mound, supported admirably by the likes of José Berríos and Chris Bassitt. Each pitch and play has contributed to this renewed momentum.

The eventual return of both Garcia and Scherzer is anticipated to boost morale in the Jays’ clubhouse significantly. If they can come back strong and healthy, the Toronto Blue Jays could emerge as a formidable force in the American League playoff race.
