One week after MiLaysia Fulwiley, a talented guard for the South Carolina Gamecocks, made the surprising choice to enter the transfer portal, she took to Instagram to share her thoughts and express her gratitude. On Thursday, she posted a heartfelt message, emphasizing her appreciation for her hometown of Columbia, SC, and for the connections she formed during her time with the Gamecocks.

“I want to begin by thanking my hometown of Columbia, SC,” she wrote. “Without my village, I wouldn’t be where I am today, chasing my dreams. Thank you to Coach Staley, the entire South Carolina staff, and my teammates for the unforgettable memories we’ve created together.”

In her message, she didn’t shy away from highlighting the love and support she received from fans, saying, “Most importantly, thank you to the FAMs for embracing and supporting me over the past two years. After thoughtful consideration, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal. I’m excited for what’s next and grateful for all the continued love and support.”

This decision came on the heels of a tough game for the Gamecocks, who lost 82-59 to UConn in the national championship. While Fulwiley didn’t delve into her specific reasons for transferring, many fans speculate that her diminished role—she didn’t make the starting rotation this past season—may have influenced her choice. Despite this, she had a noteworthy season, averaging 11.7 points per game and shooting an impressive 42.6% from the field over 77 games, typically logging about 19 minutes on the court.

Interestingly, Fulwiley’s decision to transfer coincided with the announcement that Ta’Niya Latson, a former guard from Florida State, would be joining South Carolina. Latson’s show of support for Fulwiley, expressed through heart emojis on Instagram, underscores the camaraderie among athletes, even amid changes in team dynamics.

Wherever Fulwiley lands next, her impact on South Carolina basketball will surely be felt.

Fulwiley has always been more than just a player on the court. Growing up in Columbia and attending Keenan High School, she became a hometown hero by opting to stay close to her roots and play for a national powerhouse. Her energetic style and devoted passion for the game endeared her to fans, transforming her into a standout player beloved by many.

During her tenure, she played a significant role in the Gamecocks’ 2024 undefeated championship run and made history as the first freshman to win the SEC Tournament MVP—a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about her talent. Her popularity in the college scene even led her to secure an NIL deal with Steph Curry’s brand, illustrating her prowess both on and off the court.
