The Philadelphia 76ers are facing a significant hurdle as they enter the playoffs without their star center, Joel Embiid, who remains out for the opening round against the Boston Celtics.
Things took a sudden downturn following an emergency surgery just after the regular season, casting doubt on Embiid’s ability to participate for the duration of the series.
During the season’s final week, Embiid was diagnosed with appendicitis, leading to an urgent appendectomy on April 9.
This procedure typically requires two to five weeks of recovery for athletes, making the timeline concerning. Although Embiid made a brief appearance on the bench to support the team during their Play-In victory over the Orlando Magic, he has yet to resume any basketball activities.
As Game 1 approached on Sunday, April 19, ESPN’s Jorge Sedano reported that Embiid’s return “anytime soon” appears improbable, given that he hasn’t resumed practice or rehabilitation.
“It doesn’t look like we’ll see him anytime soon because he’s still recovering from that surgery,” Sedano reported. “We asked him about a potential return during the series, and he said they’re not ruling it out. But this is something that’s touch-and-go. He hasn’t started basketball activities or anything.”

This situation couldn’t come at a worse time for Philadelphia, entering the playoffs as the seventh seed against a formidable No. 2-seeded Celtics. 76ers head coach Nick Nurse now grapples with devising a strategy under the assumption that Embiid won’t be available.
With Embiid, who averaged 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds this season, sidelined, the offensive load will likely shift to Tyrese Maxey as the team looks to stay competitive.
Joel Embiid’s Injury Prompted Controversial Opinions Across the League
“cleared to play” but opted to sit out. This assertion quickly drew heated backlash from Embiid’s trainer, Drew Hanlen, who labeled the claim “100% false” and urged fans to disregard misleading narratives about Embiid’s commitment.
To set the record straight, this is 100% false.
Nothing worse than when media members make up lies for clicks & views then hide behind unnamed “sources.” https://t.co/BKqa43zq2d

As the series transitions back to Philadelphia later this week, the team remains in limbo regarding Embiid’s recovery. For a franchise that has faced challenges advancing past the second round during Embiid’s time, this latest twist feels all too familiar.
